Size Guide

Vallenestudio Fit Studio

A well-fitting dog garment should provide comfortable coverage while allowing your dog to walk, sit, turn and move naturally. Because dogs of the same breed or weight can have very different proportions, we recommend measuring your dog before selecting a size.

For the most useful comparison, measure your dog's back length, chest circumference and neck circumference while your dog is standing naturally.

Measurements are more reliable than breed or weight alone.

Back Length

Measure along the back from the base of the neck toward the base of the tail while your dog is standing naturally.

Measurement 02

Chest

Measure around the widest part of the ribcage, usually just behind the front legs.

Measurement 03

Neck

Measure around the lower neck where the garment neckline will naturally sit.

Prioritize Chest Measurement

For most dog clothing, chest circumference is one of the most important measurements because insufficient room can restrict natural movement.

Weight Is Only a Reference

Two dogs with the same weight can have very different chest widths, neck sizes and body lengths. Always compare actual measurements.

How to Measure Your Dog Correctly

Use a flexible measuring tape and keep your dog standing in a normal, relaxed position. The tape should sit close to the body without squeezing the coat or skin.

01

Measure the Back

Start near the base of the neck where the shoulders begin and measure along the spine toward the base of the tail. Do not measure all the way to the tip of the tail.

02

Measure the Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, generally just behind the front legs. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to the body.

03

Measure the Neck

Measure around the lower portion of the neck where the neckline of the garment is likely to rest. Do not measure directly behind the ears.

04

Measure More Than Once

If your dog moves during measurement, repeat each measurement and use the consistent result rather than relying on a single reading.

Choose by garment type

Different Styles Need Different Fit Considerations

The same dog may prefer a slightly different fit depending on whether the garment is a lightweight cooling layer, a waterproof four-leg suit or an insulated winter coat.

Rainwear

Waterproof & Rain Jackets

Choose enough room through the chest and shoulders for walking and running. Coverage should protect the body without pulling tightly across the back.

Full Coverage

Four-Leg Protective Suits

Chest, back length and leg movement are especially important. A suit that is too small may restrict shoulders or hips, while excessive length may affect leg placement.

Summer

Cooling & Lightweight Apparel

Cooling clothing should sit comfortably without excessive looseness, while still allowing normal breathing, movement and airflow.

Winter

Insulated & Padded Clothing

Allow enough space for your dog's natural coat and comfortable movement. Thick fur may require more room than short, smooth coats with similar body measurements.

What If My Dog Is Between Two Sizes?

It is common for a dog's chest, neck and back measurements not to fall perfectly within one single size range.

In that situation, consider the garment design, your dog's body proportions and the measurement that is most important for comfortable movement.

Wide Chest Prioritize adequate chest room and shoulder movement.
Long Body Consider back coverage while ensuring the chest is not excessively loose.
Thick Coat Allow additional comfort room so dense fur is not compressed too tightly.
Full-Leg Suit Check both body length and chest because garment proportions affect leg placement.

Common Sizing Questions

Should Clothing Fit Tightly?

No. Clothing should sit securely but should not restrict breathing, walking, sitting or shoulder and leg movement.

Can I Use Breed as My Size?

Breed can provide context but is not accurate enough by itself. Individual dogs vary significantly in chest width and body length.

My Dog Has Very Thick Fur

Measure over your dog's natural coat without compressing it excessively and allow enough room for comfortable movement.

My Dog Is Still Growing

Growing dogs may change sizes quickly. Re-measure before ordering rather than relying on measurements taken several months earlier.

How Do I Check the Fit?

After dressing your dog, confirm that the neckline, chest and leg openings are comfortable and that your dog can walk normally.

When Should I Remove the Garment?

Remove clothing if you notice restricted movement, rubbing, overheating, discomfort or any unusual behavior.

Still Unsure About Size?

Send us the product you are considering together with your dog's measurements. Providing chest circumference, back length and neck circumference will help us better understand the fit you are comparing.
